Our sessions will focus on the extraordinary developments of the Inca Empire, up through the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century. We will conclude with a discussion of issues relating to the archaeological record, Spanish colonialism, modernity, tourism, and the situation of contemporary indigenous communities in modern Peru. Each class will be a richly illustrated slide lecture with ample opportunity for discussion and Q & A, and I will provide for each class a set of readings that will be made available to course registrants in advance of the class.
