After 1500, Europe is thrown into turmoil by the Protestant Reformation and invasion of Italy by the French and Spanish monarchies. A new breed of artistic genius arises: the incredible fantasy worlds of Hieronymus Bosch; the European-wide impact of Albrecht Durer through his engravings and woodcuts; the first independent landscapes; Pieter Brueghel’s revolutionary approach to merging religious imagery with deep natural landscapes and human comedy; Hans Holbein the Younger’s masterful portraits of the Tudor court in England—to name but a few.

Nora Hamerman

Nora Hamerman, MA, holds her MA degree from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. She has taught art history at the University of Virginia and Shenandoah University, and has published articles in scholarly journals as well as hundreds of reviews of art exhibitions as a freelance writer. She studied in Italy for three years as a Fulbright scholar and Chester Dale Fellow of the National Gallery of Art, and is an experienced translator from German, Italian, and Spanish.
