The Beatles were arguably the most significant popular music group of the 1960s, and are widely considered one of the most important forces in the history of popular Western culture. The music of the Beatles not only globalized American-style rock'n'roll, but redefined popular music in the process, establishing "pop" as a dominant form of musical expression. Their songwriting and record production set new standards, embracing a limitless variety of styles which contributed to the evolution of rock music from simple dance music to an artform seeking to reflect and articulate the values of a burgeoning youth cultural voice. Although the Beatles' recorded output only spanned eight years, much of their impact is still felt and heard in today's popular music. This course offers an opportunity to explore the music and career of the Beatles. The music will be discussed in a nontechnical way, centering on music fundamentals, their use of language, and the band's penchant for experimentation in the recording studio.
