The Middle Ages were convulsed by a series of wars of aggression know as The Crusades. Ostensibly about religion, they were motivated by many other things and wrought havoc and destruction to a large part of the Orient. They even resulted in Christian vs. Christian conflict and the sack of Constantinople. We will examine the five W's of this medieval movement to better understand them.   There were eight major Crusade expeditions varying in size, strength and degree of success between 1096 and 1291. In this course we will study the origins and motivations of this West-East conflict. We will be introduced to the major players including crusading queens, children, Saracen heroes and study the long-lasting effects of this series of wars. The Crusades continues to trouble Christian consciences and have embittered Muslim attitudes towards the West; their negative influence is still relevant today.
