This course will present the key ideas in the teacher's 2022 book Money, Finance, Reality, Morality. We'll look at what money actually is, why it is useful, and how (and how well) the current money-creation system works to serve today's economy. Then we will turn to what I call savings-money, money outside of the real economy. That brings us to the Triptych, my diagram of how money and finance relate to economic reality. We will pay close attention to the tendency of finance to be unrealistic. The discussions will never be far from ethical concerns. Is it good to place numbers (prices and wages) on human activities? Is inflation bad? What is just and what is greedy in finance? Alternative theories will be presented, so students can judge whether the new ones are an improvement.nd
