The fusion of science fiction with Film Noir is sometimes known as "Tech Noir". This label was first applied to films like Blade Runner (1982) and The Terminator (1984). The films in this category combine the gritty, dark atmosphere and cynical hard-boiled protagonists with thematic elements of science fiction. This class will examine two early hybrid films with Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville (1965) and the dystopian Soylent Green (1973). Both films feature a "classic" noir detective set within futuristic settings and themes. We will screen the films together to explore what each formula brings to the film.
