The birth of writing is one of the great unsolved problems in the history and science of archaeology and linguistics. Archaeologists have for centuries struggled to understand its origins and what cognitive spark started the recording of thoughts and experiences inscribed in rock and on bone, painted on fragments of ceramics and walls, and later written on papyrus, parchment, and paper. This class will explore what is known of the deep past and archaeology of writing in places like ancient Egypt, the Indus valley, China, and the Americas. Students will learn about the structure of ancient writing systems, discuss new research from the field of cognitive archaeology, and delve into the process of reading many still undeciphered languages and inscriptions.

John Hessler
John Hessler is an applied mathematician, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) scientist, and lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in modeling and mapping the geospatial transmission of zoonotic diseases and the movement of their animal hosts. He is the director of the biomap-lab, where their present research centers on mapping the complex movement of avian H5N1 influenza in migrating bird and mammal populations. An affiliated researcher at the Data Science & AI Institute at Johns Hopkins, his theoretical research concentrates on the use of wavelet and spectral analysis in historic epidemiology, on Markov Random Field disease mapping techniques, and on computational approaches to the uncertain geographic context problem.Date | Day | Time | Location |
