Joseph Conrad is widely considered to be one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Born in the Ukraine and of Polish descent, Conrad, though he was not fluent in English until his twenties, managed to become one of the master prose-stylists of the English language. A writer of adventerous sea stories in exotic locales, Conrad was also deeply concerned with the devastating effects of colonialism and with the plight of the individual in what appeared to be an amoral and indifferent cosmos. In this course, we will read and discuss a number of Conrad's most critically acclaimed works such asLord Jim, The Heart of Darkness, The Secret Sharer, and Nostromo.
