This course will explore all facets of the symphony orchestra and its evolution over time, providing inside knowledge and a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works. We will decode the conductor's gestures and the interplay between the conductor and the musicians, examine composers and their repertoire throughout history, and delve into the roles and unique sounds and qualities of the various instruments. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how orchestras function, allowing for deeper, more insightful experiences when listening to orchestral music and/or attending performances.

Samantha Clarke
Samantha Clarke, DMA is a conductor and flutist from Long Island, New York. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland, where she conducts the band and teaches conducting, and is on staff at Mason Community Arts Academy, where she coordinates Music Education Outreach. Dr. Clarke completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in instrumental conducting at George Mason University. She holds a master's degree in conducting and a bachelor's degree in music education from Long Island University Post and has taught music and band at the elementary through college levels. In addition to conducting wind bands and orchestras, she is an avid performer as a flutist. Dr. Clarke has published her dissertation, master's thesis, and various articles on conducting and music education, and is working on an upcoming book detailing the life and teachings of Anthony Maiello.
