What is fascism? This course will define the concept and explore whether fascism was a global phenomenon, an artifact of a period in history, or a movement thriving again in present day Europe or even America. Was fascism a coherent ideology or the rejection of ideas? Was it reactionary or revolutionary? To answer these questions we will look at the relationship between nationalism, modernity, and fascism. We will also explore fascism's intellectual origins, the mobilization of culture, the totalitarian state, and the role of political violence. We will address case studies, noting commenalities between fascist regimes and noting regional peculiarities. Our focus will range from interwar Europe to present day neofascism in places like Italy, Russia, and the US.
