Timed with the re-opening of Notre Dame de Paris, this class will explore how, when and why the great Gothic cathedrals were built.  We begin with the Romanesque churches that blanketed Europe after 1000 CE and conclude in the 16th century while the Gothic style flourished in Northern Europe alongside the newer Renaissance style.  Focused mainly on France, the class will deal with painting (especially illuminated books), sculpture, and the so-called minor arts alongside the (literally) towering achievements of Gothic architecture and its roots in the Islamic East.
Fee: $0.00
