The human microbiome, the organisms that make up the human ecosystem, profoundly impact health and disease. In this course, students will learn about the organisms that make up the microbiome and then investigate the microbiomes of several organ systems. The course will focus on the skin and the gut as primary examples. Students will learn about the gut microbiome, its impact on the immune system and gut microbiome and brain interaction. The microbiome impacts cancer disease and therapy, which will be explored. Finally, the course will cover recent advances and ethical questions surrounding the microbiome.

Kristina Obom

Kristina Obom, PhD, is Director of the Center for Biotechnology Education and the Program Director for the Master of Science in Bioinformatics Biotechnology programs, Johns Hopkins University. She received her BA in Natural Sciences/Public Health from Johns Hopkins, her MPH in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Yale, and her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine/City University of New York. She was a 2006 recipient of the Martin Luther King Award for Community Service and a 2009/2010 ASM/NSF Biology Scholar.
