The cinema of the 1930's is often thought to be escapist (think William Powell and Myrna Loy as wealthy Nick and Nora Charles solving crimes, or Fred Astaire dancing about in Top Hat). In fact, the bleed over from the 1920's is substantial, especially in the horror genre. The recovery from the horrors of the Great War and Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of King Tut's tomb inspired interest in the Great Beyond; Spiritualism, Reincarnation, Resuscitation, Voodoo. This manifests in movies such as The Mummy (1932), White Zombie (1932), Supernatural (1933), and The Walking Dead (1936). We will watch the movies and discuss them in their cultural context.
