"We will always have Paris." Rick to Ilsa, Casablanca
How effective can movies be in expressing the idea of romantic love through image, word, music, and dance? Why is Casablanca one of the best-loved movies of all time? Why are some musicals such potent vehicles for expressing romance? Why do we yearn for romance, find it, lose it, and mourn its loss? Is romantic love fleeting, by its very nature?
These are the types of questions we will ponder and debate as we view such great romantic films as Casablanca, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, An American in Paris, The Way We Were, Carol, and Her.
