Jackie Robinson broke the 20th-century color barrier in Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947. It took a long 12 years until the last team of the then 16 teams integrated. The Boston Red Sox was the last team to have a Black player-Pumpsie Green in 1959.

This course will cover the first Black player for each team, and the player's MLB history. A sketch of the history of Black players in the 19th century, before the "Gentleman's Agreement" made the sport all-White, will frame the issue.

Stephen Klatsky

Stephen Klatsky has been a baseball fan for as long as he can remember. He was born in The Bronx, not far from Yankee Stadium. In high school he was a vendor at Shea Stadium-the then home of the Mets. He was a ticket seller for the Potomac Cannons of the Carolina league. He attended the first ever Washington Nationals spring training game in 2005. He has taught Baseball History classes for 10 years.
