Director John Ford is one of the more important and certainly most influential filmmakers of the 20th century.  He directed mostly westerns and war films. Ford’s westerns are easily recognized through visual clues (set in Monument Valley, for example), themes, and in the “stable” of actors he worked with throughout his long career, most notably John Wayne, whose career trajectory parallels Ford’s. We will look at three westerns to trace the filmmaking/acting prowess of these two men. We’ll begin with Stagecoach (1939), which is a major launching point for John Wayne. The Searchers (1959), a more thoughtful and nuanced western, was John Wayne’s favorite film. We’ll end the course with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) and the wonderful James Stewart playing a tenderfoot eastern attorney opposite to John Wayne’s tough guy. It is from this film we have the famous quote, “When the legend become fact, print the legend.” This course will examine history, myth, and legend
