Would we recorgnize a dictatorship if we arrived in its borders today? Autocracies like Turkey, Russia, Hungary and El Salvador are led today not by soldiers in uniform visibly banning elections but by men in tailored suits who look like businessmen and who subvert democracy from within and in plain sight. These dictators in the making are part of an international movement that connects them as they challenge democracies around the globe trying to spread their new version of autocracy. How do these compare with establish autocracies like China? Is this a new type of Cold War? Is coexistence even possible? What lesson can we learn from the struggles agaisnt dictatorships of the past?

Naomi Daremblum
Naomi Daremblum is a political scientist whose work focuses on democracies in crisis in Europe and Latin America. She has had teaching appointments at New York Univesity and The New School. She has taught and written on a wide range of subjects, from the rise of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela to the literature of Isabel Allende. Her pieces have been published in magazines such as The New Republic and Letras Libres, the premier literary journal for Latin America, founded by Octavio Paz.
