From the diseases of the mummies of ancient Egypt and medieval Europe to the preserved remains of mice in the Andes, we will examine what archaeological evidence, historical manuscripts, along with techniques of ancient DNA, tell us about the long history of human disease outbreaks and pandemics. Participants will examine how recently excavated evidence, combined with historical records and new genomic sequencing techniques, are shedding light on the deep history of diseases, like smallpox and other ancient viral and bacterial pathogens. The course will also survey the long history of zoonotic spillover and what archaeological and historical evidence can tell us about the spread of more modern zoonotic diseases like HIV, Ebola, and COVID-19.

John Hessler

John Hessler is an applied mathematician, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) scientist, and lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in modeling and mapping the geospatial transmission of zoonotic diseases and the movement of their animal hosts. He is the director of the biomap-lab, where their present research centers on mapping the complex movement of avian H5N1 influenza in migrating bird and mammal populations. An affiliated researcher at the Data Science & AI Institute at Johns Hopkins, his theoretical research concentrates on the use of wavelet and spectral analysis in historic epidemiology, on Markov Random Field disease mapping techniques, and on computational approaches to the uncertain geographic context problem.
