In The American Trilogy (American Pastoral, I Married a Communist, and The Human Stain)  Philip Roth masterfully dramatizes the collision between American ideals and historical reality, and its profound effects on human lives. Such topics as the Vietnam War, radical politics, McCarthyism, racism, and political correctness are explored within a fictional context and through the perspective of Roth's narrator and alter ego, Nathan Zuckerman. We will discuss and analyze in great depth these three novels. Student participation is essential and will be strongly encouraged. The required text is Phillip Roth, The American Trilogy.  (Library of America)
