Stephen Sondheim is undoubtedly the most innovative and influential figure in American musical theater history. With his intricate lyrics and unique musical style, he transformed the traditional Broadway musical form. His works explored darker themes and the complexities of relationships, and challenged the genre's conventional formulas. This course will explore the forces that helped shape Sondheim's development, from his troubled relationship with his mother to his close friendship with Oscar Hammerstein II, who acted as his mentor and surrogate father, to collaborations with Leonard Bernstein and directors Hal Prince and James Lapine. Through musical examples of Sondheim's greatest works, including Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Company, and Sunday in the Park with George; a deep dive into his wittiest and most intriguing lyrics; and recorded interviews with Sondheim himself, we will examine Sondheim's lasting influence on musical theater and the ways in which his legacy continues to influence artists today.
