The dissemination of news and other factual information in the United States was once primarily controlled by a small group of media gatekeepers-major newspapers, a few broadcast networks and the reputable wire services. The internet and social media changed all that. Many Americans now cannot distinguish between a well-researched investigate report from The New York Times and disinformation produced or spread by hostile governments that your friends post on Facebook or send you in messages. With the advent of "deep fake" technology and the hallucinations of reality generated by artificial intelligence, it is increasingly challenging even for media professionals to separate fact from friction.

This course will explore why many Americans became "media illiterate," what can be done about it, how you can do your own fact-checking, and how you can respond to family and friends who believe or reproduce disinformation and misinformation.
