This course will focus on family violence as it relates to intimate partner violence. Participants will learn about the types of domestic violence present in intimate partner relationships, the dynamics, and the stages of domestic violence in these relationships, as well as the signs that abuse is occurring. Included will be a discussion on the crimes commonly associated with intimate partner violence, to include murder, sexual assault, and stalking. Theories of causation and history of domestic violence are also discussed.

Responses and remedies involving these types of crimes by the criminal justice system (to include the police and the court system) will also be discussed. This will include safety plans, programs, services, and legal remedies available to protect victims of domestic violence. Legislation, at the federal level and at the State of Maryland level, research, arrest laws in the State of Maryland, and peace and protective orders in the State of Maryland will shed light on how those impacted can be protected.
