The United States, even before it extended its western boundaries to the Pacific Coast, had an economic interest in Asia. As the US rose to the status of world power in the late 19th century, the country's interest turned to political matters. In the 20th century, in addition to having major trading partners in Asia, the US fought three wars there.

Asia's present is strongly grounded in Asia's past-its politics and societies, nations' relations with each other, and their relations with the West. It behooves Americans to understand Asia's history. The student will gain insights into the development of Asian countries, with an emphasis on China and Japan. This will include development of their societies, how Asian countries dealt with each other, and their often-troubled relations with the West, in particular, the United States.
