Over the span of more than fifty years and fifty films, Woody Allen has created a body of work distinguished by its brilliant wit and intelligence, as well as its unique visual style. Through a viewing and detailed analysis and discussion of six films, we will examine three dominant themes:

1. Relationships between Men and Women (ANNIE HALL, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS)
2. Fantasy versus Reality (THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, BLUE JASMINE)
3. Crime and Punishment (CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, MATCHPOINT)
In short, we will confront in these seriocomic film's central questions about the possibility of morality, the value of love, and the role of art.
Student participation will be strongly encouraged.
