What does it mean to "create"? Who is the "creator" of a beloved comic book, an iconic photograph, or a best-selling song ... and by what standard(s) is that determined? What rights, if any, does "creation" convey legally, or morally for that matter? In this class, we'll take an in-depth, interactive, inside look under the hood of intellectual property rights and the battles that shape the multi-billion-dollar global entertainment industry of today. We will explore (allegedly) stolen award-winning films and hit songs, understand why zombies eat copyright for breakfast, investigate why artists behind iconic Marvel and D.C. superheroes believe their rights-and staggering sums of profit-got zapped far across the multiverse, and much, much more.

Sig Libowitz

Sig Libowitz, is the Director of Johns Hopkins’ Graduate Film & Media Program and a Senior Lecturer. He is a filmmaker, entertainment attorney, producer, writer, actor, and former studio executive in Hollywood and New York. He wrote and produced The Response, which was shortlisted for an Academy Award (Best Short Film). The film is a courtroom drama based on the actual transcripts of the Guantanamo Bay military tribunals. Sig was Executive-in-Charge of Production for In the Bedroom starring Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson and Marisa Tomei, which was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Sig previously served as Vice-President at Paramount, Director of Production at Film Four, and Production Executive at Good Machine (now Focus Features).
