The 1930s are often characterized by the programs and personalities of the New Deal, but the energy of these federal programs and the personal charisma of FDR, was only a small part of the period. This class will focus on the social movements, the cultural changes and the foreign policy concerns that were as important as the New Deal policies, and which directly affected these policies. We will also consider the opponents of the New Deal and the movements they led.

We will briefly review the 1920s to understand and contrast the ideology of the New Deal. Discussion opportunities-possibly heated-will help us explore how the events of this controversial period can be applied today. Resources include websites, radio programs, newsreels, and documentaries of the time. A reading and film list will also be provided by the instructor.

The class will conclude with a trip to Greenbelt, MD, a planned New Deal Community.

William Barry

William “Bill” Barry is a specialist in labor history and is the retired Director of Labor Studies at The Community College of Baltimore County. He taught courses on the history of labor at CCBC and also created a full semester course on the history of the 1930s. He has taught courses on the 1930s and the history of American labor for the Osher programs at Johns Hopkins University and Towson University. The history of slavery course grew out of his course on the history of American labor. Bill is a film zealot and enjoys teaching film as well.
